Why is the estimate higher than the same job would be down the hill?
Access, mostly. Equipment that would be wheeled from a truck is carried, there is often nowhere to stage it, and each monitoring visit is a drive up the grade rather than a stop. None of that is a higher rate; it is more labor and more visits, and both should appear as their own lines.
Can a stone foundation wall be dried, or does it have to come out?
It is dried, but slowly. Rubble and stone hold moisture in the mass rather than at the surface, so readings keep coming back wet after the room feels normal. That is a longer monitoring schedule rather than a demolition scope, which is usually the cheaper outcome even though it takes longer.
The house has three floor levels. How is the scope written?
Level by level, because each one is a different assembly over a different substructure. A single figure covering the whole house hides which level the cost sits on. Ask for the scope broken out by level, with the removals and the readings that produced them named for each.
