What it is
Structural drying returns framing, subfloor, drywall and slab to normal moisture content after the free water is gone. On an estimate it is the most countable stage there is: a number of units, a number of days, and a reading the job ends on.
When it is needed
After any extraction, and after any event where water reached inside an assembly - behind a baseboard, under a floor, into a wall cavity. A room that feels dry a day later is the usual reason this gets started late, and starting late is what turns drying lines into removal lines.
What it typically involves
The wet area is sealed so the system works on a fixed volume of air; air movers run across wet surfaces, dehumidifiers pull the evaporated water out, and readings are taken daily at marked points against a dry standard from unaffected material in the same house. Because the equipment is billed per unit per day, this is the part of a bill a homeowner can most easily verify - and the part that can finish early.
